此慣用語的來源未經證實，但普遍認為與會計與財務報表有關：所謂的bottom line 指的是報表的最後一行，在把所有收入和支出都計算完畢後，呈現的淨利或淨損。
如今，the bottom line 指的是最後、最關鍵的重點或結果，尤其是務實的結論（常與金錢相關，但不一定）。它用來略過枝節、直指核心。
